Tools Needed
Instructions
Step 1
In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and melted butter. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves.
Step 2
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for about 5 minutes, or until the syrup thickens slightly.
Step 3
Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it cool slightly.
Step 4
Add a few drops of red food coloring to the syrup and stir until well combined. Repeat this process with the other colors, creating a separate batch for each color. You should end up with four distinct colored syrups.
Step 5
In a large bowl, combine the cornmeal and a pinch of salt. Stir until well combined.
Step 6
Using a piping bag or a ziplock bag with a corner cut off, pipe the colored syrups into the cornmeal mixture, creating a swirly pattern.
Step 7
Spread the mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let it dry completely, either at room temperature or in a low-temperature oven (150°F) for about an hour.
Step 8
Once the mixture is dry, break it into small rings and your Homemade Frooty O's are ready to enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a stand mixer to mix the cornmeal and syrup?
While it's technically possible, we recommend doing it by hand to avoid over-mixing the mixture.
Preparation Tips
- To ensure the cereal dries evenly, make sure to spread it out in a thin layer on the baking sheet.
