Tools Needed
Instructions
Step 1
In a small bowl, sprinkle gelatin over 1/4 cup of water and let it sit for 5 minutes to soften.
Step 2
Combine corn syrup, sugar, and 1/2 cup of water in a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves.
Step 3
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and attach a candy thermometer. Cook to 300°F (hard-ball stage).
Step 4
Remove the saucepan from heat and carefully add the softened gelatin, whisking until fully incorporated.
Step 5
Add citric acid, salt, and a few drops of each food coloring to the mixture. Whisk until the colors are evenly distributed.
Step 6
Pour the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet and let it cool and set at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
Step 7
Once set, use a cookie cutter or a knife to cut out ring shapes from the mixture. You should end up with around 20-25 rings.
Step 8
In a large bowl, sift together wheat flour and cornstarch.
Step 9
Add a few drops of water to the flour mixture to create a workable dough. Knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes pliable.
Step 10
Roll out the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness and use a cookie cutter or a glass to cut out circle shapes. You should end up with around 40-50 circles.
Step 11
Place a ring shape on top of a dough circle and press gently to seal. Repeat with the remaining ingredients.
Step 12
Cook the homemade Froot Loops in a large pot of boiling water for 2-3 minutes, or until they float to the surface. Drain and rinse with cold water.
Step 13
To make the puffed rice cereal, cook 1/4 cup of puffed rice in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly, until lightly toasted.
Step 14
To assemble the cereal, place a few pieces of the puffed rice cereal in a bowl, followed by a few homemade Froot Loops. Serve and enjoy!
